Steaming Up The Kitchen…
This whole being pregnant thing is pretty fun. I get to eat just about whatever I want, although certain things like raw chicken and mushrooms make me a little bit queasy, but those cupcakes every night for dessert sure have been delicious. And, I can kind of play the whole, ‘But honey I’m PREGNANT! I’m carrying your child’ thing when I don’t want to clean the bathtub.
There are, however, some not so awesome things. Being super sleepy like always? That isn’t so fun. Hearing people at work ask me if I’m okay because I look so tired? Well that is just rude! Sports bras that literally cause physical injury when trying to get them on? I guess that’s 50/50, but having it hurt when I run, that’s a negative. The hardest part of all though? Not being able to have a cocktail, or two, or three.
I gave up drinking one month a few years ago, and while it wasn’t that bad, I didn’t see a major point in it. Now that I’m cooking a baby, I know and fully understand how important it is not to touch the stuff. It helps that the smell makes me nauseous, but that doesn’t make me miss it any less!
My solution?? Not-tails, similar (okay, exactly the same) to mocktails. Alcohol free drinks that make me feel like I’m still joining in on the fun, only without the buzz or the hangover that ensues.
For the very first not-tail at Savory Stiletto, my Blood Orange Not-Tini! Grab a shaker and get ready to hop on the wagon again with me!!! 6 more month!
In a small shaker, squeeze the blood orange quarter and the lime quarter. Add the mint leaves and muddle until the mint is broken up nicely. Add the simple syrup, water and some ice and shake for about 10-15 seconds. Strain into a martini glass and top with sparkling berry lemonade or juice and enjoy!
My thoughts: I thought for sure a not-tail wouldn’t have the same effect as a cocktail, and while I most certainly don’t have a buzz, it does feel nice to drink something out of a martini glass that isn’t just straight water! After Baby Baukovic gets here this summer, I will most definitely be enjoying a few of these grown up style!
I think the key to a solid not-tail is to have it be something that would taste great as a real cocktail, not too sweet, not too sour, and still refreshing. Now if only I can find an alcohol free tequila….

Even I will admit after trying these, they’re fantastic!
